Spring Awakening

Don’t Do Sadness/Blue Wind

In August of 2023, I worked with Ormond College Students’ Club to create the lighting design for their performance of Spring Awakening by Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik. This show was performed in the Union Theatre at The University of Melbourne

For this lighting design, I worked a lot with the contrast between naturalistic dialogue lighting and bright, colourful concert lights. The direction team wanted the songs to feel as though they were happening in a separate world from the dialogue, using mystical and immersive lighting cues to emphasise that difference. In songs, I utilised follow-spots and rhythm-activated lighting to create a more overt ‘concert-like’ effect, allowing the scenes of hard-hitting dialogue to feel that much more tangible than the upbeat musical interludes in the story.

For Spring Awakening, I fulfilled the roles of Lighting Designer, Operator and Electrician.

This show was programmed on a ETC ION XE Lighting Console in a 398-seat pros-arch theatre.
